Linen (European flax)
Linen is a natural and biodegradeable fiber. It is one of the oldest fabrics known to humanity: Flax has been cultivated and harvested to create linen textiles for thousands of years. Today, 95% of the world’s flax is grown in Western Europe, in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Linen is made from the fibers of the flax plant. It belongs to the “bast fiber” category, which includes hemp, ramie and nettle to name a few. Linen is known to be difficult and laborious to produce and comes with natural variation based on the specific agrigultural and environmental circumstances. Apart from the natural qualities of linen, a major benefit of linen is that it doesn’t require any irrigation because it relies on seasonal rainfalls, nor does linen contain any GMOs.
Linen is dry, lightweight, breathable and fast-drying, making it ideal for summer garments. While linen is naturally prone to wrinkling due to its low elasticity, this can add to its charm and character over time, with a soft patina developing after repeated washes.
We source exclusively linen from European flax farms in France and Belgium for our linen shirts, shorts and trousers.
