Recycled cashmere
Cashmere is a sought after, extremely fine, soft and warm wool fiber, traditionally obstained from goats in the Himalayas of Inner Mongolia. Because the Cashmere goat flock experiences temperatures of down to minus -40°C, the sheep develop a fleece with properties to survive these rugged conditions. Unfortunately, global demand has put increased pressure on Mongolian farmers and herding grounds, leading to overbreeding of cashmere goats, a decrease in fiber quality, and the desertification of the Mongolian region. Recycled cashmere is less resource intense: Scraps, off-cuts and old garments are collected, manually sorted by color and quality, trimmed and then mechanically shredded to new fibers ready for spinning. The color of recycled cashmere wool is achieved through the sorting and subsequent blending and spinning process - no dyestuff and less water is required. As a result, recycled cashmere also varies naturally in color from batch to batch.
We work with heritage Italian mills that have developed recycled cashmere yarns, made from post-consumer knitwear (old sweaters). The GRS certification (short for Global Recycling Standard) ensures that any recycled wool is really recycled and not virgin, and that post-consumer wool is really consumer waste and not production waste.
We source recycled cashmere for our cashmere sweaters, beanies and scarves.
