Our Materials

The choice of raw material, or fiber, is central in creating considered garments. It influences how a garments looks and feels on your skin , how durable and washable it is - and the impact a garment has on people and planet. Both during its creation - farming, milling and manufacturing - and when in handling it at the end of its life. All of this makes choosing materials complicated. Explore the materials we use, and why we use them, below.

Material Classification

Because no material is perfect, we’ve developed a material choice matrix based on the Made-by Fiber Bible, our own research and industry standards, that helps us evaluate which materials to consider - and which never to consider. The materials are classified from A to E, with A being the most preferred and E the worst, and takes into consideration the environmental impact of the creation of the material.

In 2022, the garments in our collection where made up of 76% A and B fibers, 18% C fibers, 6% D fibers (conventional cotton) and no E fibers. To learn more about our garment materials and production volumes read our latest progress reports.

Comparison of commonly used materials

Below you'll find a simplified overview of how materials compare in terms of their impacts at different lifecycle stages. When choosing materials, we cannot only consider the impact of the fiber's creation - we need to consider it's lifecycle impact.
