The Wool Jacket

Dark Navy

A portrait of a Canadian boy by Angela Hill
We make the same garments again and again. London-based photographer Angela Hill brings the same attention to people. We gave her two words, obsession and autumn.
"I like the awkwardness of the situation."
I want to pick up a tea from Pret but I have too much camera equipment to carry the cup. I arrive at the house and ring the bell. There is a long pause and a guy answers only half awake. I learn that August is still asleep, his sister has come down the stairs to the hallway and says she will wake him. I am invited to wait upstairs in the kitchen. I decline at first and wait downstairs.
August comes down and I go up to the kitchen with him. Everyone seems hesitant and unsure and guarded but there is beautiful light in the garden I say. I like the awkwardness of the situation.
The stylist arrives and we go to get coffees and pastries. August never ends up eating his. He is gentle and kind and funny throughout the day. I like being with him. I tell him he should be an actor as he is very good at interpreting directions. I shoot for a few hours, moving location every hour.
Back home I reflect on the day; on the memory of being in the sun.
This is a portrait of a Canadian boy with DISCO, SUKI and BOY.
— Angela Hill, on the day of the shoot
My memory now is as light refracted, light scattered.
An owl calls in the cemetery. There are wild strawberries in the garden.
The family gathers for Christmas. I arrive in Dundee.
Magdalene Yard Terrace and the bandstand.
Queen’s hotel. The Aran sweater.
ANAIS ANAIS.
Christmas again. Bacardi and Coke.
The cabin up by the lake. 7-UP.
Diversion to Perth.
All the colours of tinsel, the light is/was.
My cousins.
