The Merino Wool Farms 2020
In 2020 we’re introducing two new Merino Wool farms, carefully selected in collaboration with our Italian Mill, Tollegno, and their sourcing and certification partner Chargeur. Both farms are Nativa™ certified, which ensures the highest standard of animal husbandry and land management, breeding and farming in harmony with the local ecosystems.
The Rothamay farm is located in the breathtaking landscapes of Tasmania, just outside a town called Bothwell. The farm has been owned and run by the Campbells for five generations, currently headed by Duncan, Anita and their family who look after 3500 hectares land and 7500 Merino sheep with the help four dogs. A life's work to which the family is dedicated with passion and a sense of pragmatism, the Duncans rotate land and herds.In summer the sheep graze by one plot of land at a lake, in winter they're in the grasslands - allowing the lands to recover. With scorching hot summers and freezing winters, the rolling hills and varying landscapes of Tasmania provide the perfect home for Merino sheep. The sheep's health is monitored on a daily basis and any symptoms of disease are treated immediately.Their wool is a product of nature's engineering, capable of temperature regulation, moisture wicking and odor neutralization. The result is a wool diameter of 18,8 micron - one of the finest available.
The Terara farm is located 6 hours north of Perth in the flatlands of West Australia, in the Binnu area adjacent to the Kalbarri National Park. Terara is owned and run by Don Nairn and his son Leigh, who is an agronomist, with the highest commitment to animal welfare and land management. The farm encompasses 2500 hectares of land, housing 1800 sheep. In 2003, The Nairn family farm was among the first to pioneer mixed farming (Grain and Graze), allowing them to run both financially sustainable and biodiverse farming. The grain-graze system involves sowing forage crops to feed the sheep, on a rotational basis. To increase their livelihood, the Nairn farm needed to increase livestock, which often comes at the expense of pressure on lands, in worst case land erosion, and costly animal husbandry. By investing in mixed farming, including planting forage shrubs such as rhagodia, the Terara farm was able to provide both a better environment for their sheep, secure natural feeding supplements and fight soil erosion. The sheep at Terara are sheared every 8 months and constantly inspected for worm to ensure they live healthy lives.
Both The Rothamay and Terara farms are Nativa™ certified. This means that the farms demonstrate extraordinary commitment to animal welfare and responsible land management, ensuring not just the welfare of the sheep but also the biodiversity in and around their grounds. All Nativa certified farms and wool is mulesing free and RWS certified.
